ADVENTURE SOUTH GUIDE SERVICE-Buras/Empire/Venice---

Today I had Jeff and Elizabeth Harlan of Lafayette down to fish with me in Venice. On my ride down this morning, I could see lightning flashing in the distance the entire trip, and I figured that it would be worse as I approached Venice. Sure enough, when I got to the Venice Marina, I could see huge clouds building to the east in the pre-dawn darkness and was really wondering if we were even going to leave the dock at all. At about 6:15 we finally decided that it was not going to get any better, and that we would head in our intended direction and just seek shelter if any weather got to close.

Even though there was some threatening weather to our east and moving our way fast, the water was surprisingly clean and there was not a doubt in my mind that the trout would be in the same spot as yesterday. On their first casts, both Jeff and Elizabeth got a strike, and it was not long before the trout were being swung over the gunnels. It was pretty fast paced, but with the dark clouds were closing in fast and we wanted to get as many in the boat as we could before we had to run for cover. Fortunately it was as though someone heard our prayers and what looked to be very bad, only turned out to be some light rain that lasted only minutes. The whole time the rains came down, my crew kept putting fish in the boat. We got rained on several time, but never hard enough to run us off, and the best thing is that there was no lightning in the area.

When we left our first spot we had 38 nice trout, so it did not take much work at our second spot for them to catch 12 more and fill their 2 man limit. At the second spot the fish were at bit slower, but if you threw out and reeled it in really slow along the bottom, you could get one to pick it up every now and then. With their limit of trout iced down and ready for Mack Da' Knife, I fired up the motor and went in search of redfish.

I had already made a stop in search of reds on the way to our second trout stop, but the tide was not falling for some reason and the fish just did not want to cooperate. Now that it was later in the day and judging from the change in water color in the area, I was sure that the tide was moving and that we should be able to get in the reds before heading in. We pulled up to the same reef that my clients yesterday smoked the reds on, and the fish were there. Jeff had the hot hand as he boated several reds before Elizabeth even got the first bite. She did come on strong in the end and was able to help the box by putting her limit in the box. Thanks, and hopefully we can fish together again soon. All the fish were caught using Deadly Dudley Terro Tail Jr's on 5/16 ounce jigheads. Color did not seem to matter. I did pick up some Frelich 100's this morning, but they just did not work very good today.
