ADVENTURE SOUTH GUIDE SERVICE-Buras/Empire/Venice---
2 Day Report
Yesterday I had 2 wonderful guys from the New Orleans area (I've left out their names to protect the innocent HA, HA.) At any rate Mr. Bobby fishes with me quite often and he brought along Mr. Ray for a little trout slam down in Empire. We left the dock at around 5:30 to avoid the traffic jam that was developing behind us at the launch and headed to the west. The past several days I have been putting my clients on trout at the same spot, and yesterday was no different. Even though it was still a bit dark when we got to our intended location, I could see the trout coming out of the water after the bait. It took us a little while to get into the correct position to catch them, but when I finally had the boat anchored properly, it was as easy as getting the baits into the strike zone and starting to crank. There was a little reef breaking the flow of the hard incoming tide, and when they hit that spot it was almost a hook up every time. The only problem was that the reef seemed to have an appetite for jigheads, and the guys got hung up quite a few times. Oh well, that's what tackle stores are for. The action continued at a pretty fast pace until some guys pulled up and decided that they wanted a little bit of the action and proceeded to idle in on a squat and scare everything within 100 miles away. After that we fished 2 more spots before the guys were able to close the lid of the ice chest on trout #50, and these were not small trout. They were all between 18-26 inches. We tried a couple of spots for reds before heading in at 11:30.
Today I fished a trip for Capt. Ron, along with Capt.'s Pete, and Ross. We left the dock at around 6:30 and headed out in search of speckled trout over the reefs near the gulf. The bite was any thing but fast today for us, and I think it had a lot to do with the real hard rising tide, and the fact that it tends to bring in the dirty water that is kicked up by the shrimpers along the beach. Don't get me wrong, all of the boats caught fish (Capt. Pete 40, Me 36, Ross 33), but if the tide would slow down a little bit things would get much better, It was tough fishing, but things are definitely better than they were a month ago when the river was at 15 ft. Be careful out there this weekend. The weekend always makes the number of boats on the water multiply, but not every one of them should be behind the wheel of a boat.
