Tough Day On the Water
Report Date: July 17, 2002
ADVENTURE SOUTH GUIDE SERVICE-Buras/Empire/Venice---
Had a few days off due to a cancellation, and it could come none to soon. The only problem is that I was back on the water today and it was a scorcher, and I'm not talking about the fishing. On the contrary, the fishing was terrible behind Empire/Buras today. My crew wanted reds, so we fished for them all day long, but it was very, very slow. In the morning the tide was not moving at all and I knew it would just be a waiting game until the tide fell and the reds started to gorge themselves on little crabs. So it went, we hit spot after spot not catching anything, and all the wile me preaching about the redfish jubilee that was going to take place later on when the tide fell. Well guess what? The tide fell, and fell, and fell some more, but we never did find the reds stacked up. I would pull up to a spot and my crew would maybe catch 1 red, and then nothing. Talk about a pain in the butt!
It went on like this most of the day until around 1:00 when I found a little area that had lots of bait, good water color, and a falling tide. Bait was getting knocked out of the water everywhere, the only problem is that it was trout, not redfish doing the knocking, and my crew did not want trout. You want to talk about hard, try being a charter captain that has struggled to put his clients on fish all day, only to have to leave fish biting when you do find them because they are not wanted. Oh well, at least I know where they are for tomorrow if I need them.
We finished the day with 12 reds and 8 trout, and my crew worked for them. All the fish were caught using Mann's Baby 1- crankbaits, lure which has always had a place in my boat since they were first put on the market. These lures are deadly on redfish, and you will not believe the size of some of the trout you will catch on them.
