Speckled Trout and Redfish Slam

ADVENTURE SOUTH GUIDE SERVICE-Buras/Empire/Venice---
It was good to be back in Venice today! I had Cooper, David, Donnie, and Joshua from Baton Rouge fishing today with me down in Venice. We headed out at around 5:45 in order to beat the heat and as we got down the river it was simply beautiful. The winds were light, the water was green, the tide was starting to fall, and the bait was everywhere. All the ingredients were there for what was sure to be an early morning fish slam. The only problem was that the fish seemed to not know this. At our first stop we picked up 1 trout, at the second spot 1 trout, and so on and so on. The only thing that made it nice was that both of the fish were nice (5 lb. and 7 lb.). The tide in the area we were fishing just needed a little more time to fall before the bite would kick into high gear, so I just kept bouncing around, all the while planning to go back to where I had started in the morning.
At around 9:00 I called my friend Capt. Larry, who was fishing were we started the morning, to ask if he was doing anything and he said that he had just caught 1 red and a few trout, and that the tide was falling good. I crossed my fingers and headed that way, and was more than happy to see reds busting bait on the surface when we arrived. I made a cast, hooked up, one of the other guys hooked up, so I dropped anchor and watched the show. For the next 20-40 minutes the guys either had fish hooked up, or had strikes, and where able to put their 20 redfish limit in the box in no time at all. They were all nice (20"-27") redfish, the kind that rip drag off the reel when you set the hook. When we hit 20 the guys made a few more cast and then put the pressure on me to find some trout.
I was a little unsure about which way to head because the wind was shifting and it was getting a little breezy, so I went with my gut instinct and headed to a spot that produced some nice fish for me in the past this time of the year. Sure enough, the conditions looked good when we got there and the fish were there as well. They were not stacked up, but they would move in and out and all the fish were 2-3 lb. We finished the day at this spot and ended up with 35 trout and 20 reds that anyone would be proud of. Thanks guys, hope to see you again soon. All the fish were caught using Purple/Chartreuse, Avocado/Red Flake, or Black/Chartreuse Deadly Dudley Terror Tail Jr's on 5/16-ounce jigheads with a steady retrieve or under a cork.
