Speckled Trout and Redfish Both

Report Date: July 21, 2002

Today I had Mike. Curtis, and Randy from the Baton Rouge area. I?ve been talking with Mr. Mike for some time prior to this trip, and he was more than clear with his request. He just wanted his to clients, Curtis and Randy, to catch fish. With this in mind I headed out to one of the close in structures that has been holding some trout, and was very surprised to see that there was not already a boat anchored up on it. I was able to pull up and position the boat just where I wanted without any trouble. I rigged the guys up for fishing with the Frelich 150's, and told them to start chunking. Curtis got into the action fast and was starting to pull in beautiful speckled trout in no time, and Randy was not far behind. I had Mr. Mike throwing plastics, but it was no match for the Frelich 150's. I switched him over and he started catching them. We were by ourselves for about 20 minutes, before 1 boat, and then another arrived. We still had the advantage where we were anchored, but the other boats did start to pull a few fish in their direction as well. Before I knew it there was 5 other boats around us, and even though the noise of a few big motors slowed the bite down a bit, my guys were still able to consistently catch fish, and were able to put 45 nice trout in the box before they used up all the Frelich 150's.

We then left and headed in to the canes in search of redfish. I stopped to try a few spots that typically produce when the river is down, but the tide still had to fall a bit before it got right. The guys did manage to pick up a couple, but the reds were scattered. At our 3rd stop we hit the jackpot. I could see the reds chasing bait along the bank, and it was only minutes before we got into them. I worked along 1 stretch of bank, and the guys were able to fill their limit of 15 in no time, with many other fish coming off or breaking off. Curtis is from North Carolina and has fished inshore there and in Florida many times, but he was just amazed by the fishing we have down here. He could not believe that the bite could be so fast, particularly on the redfish. I was happy to hear that I had a bunch of satisfied customers when I got back to the dock.

Thanks guys, I hope to see you again soon.

The trout were caught using Frelich 150's and the reds were caught using Purple/Chartreuse or Black/Chartreuse Deadly Dudley Terror Tail Jr's on 5/16-ounce jigheads bounced across the bottom and with Mann's Baby 1- crankbaits.
