Top Dog Trout and Redfish

ADVENTURE SOUTH GUIDE SERVICE-Buras/Empire/Venice---
Today I had Jay, Shane, and Matt from Tennessee down to do a little red fishing. It was relatively windless on my ride down to Venice this morning, so I figured we would be in for one hell of a time throwing Top Dog Jr's in search of some big bull reds, but I was a little worried by the lightning that was lighting up the sky to the east. I had good reason to worry. I had just hooked my boat up to my truck, when the sky opened up and it rained cats and dogs. I mean, not a drop all the way down from Belle Chasse, and I get to the marina only to have to seek shelter from a torrential downpour. Not the way you want to start the day, but at least I was still ashore and not looking for cover while driving my boat through face stinging rain. It did finally let up and we were able to make our way down the river and toward our fishing spots. I did not really like the looks of the water at our first stop. The storms had obviously been booming up around the area most of the night, and this had left things a little choppy. We gave it a shot anyway and the guys were able to boat 3 reds and 1 nice speck before we had to run for cover. At our next spot the guys picked up a few more reds, a couple of trout, and I even got in on the action and put a 6.7 lb. trout in the boat on a Top Dog Jr. Shane, (not me, the other Shane) was able to put a 5.3 lb. trout on ice as well. We fished here a while before running back over to our 1st stop of the day to see if we could get those big bulls going. The bite was on for a short time, and each of the guys were able to hook and land some good reds, with the biggest weighing in at 15 lb., but as fast as they had started, the bite slowed quickly and we decided it was time to move to an area and finish out our limit with some smaller fish.
I pulled back on the throttle, put the trolling motor over, and did not have to pick it up again until the guys were finished with their 3 man limit of 15 reds. It was nice to pull up to 1 stretch of bank and be able to fill a limit and release a few more, not to mention the ones that were on the early release program. With the box full, I headed back up river to show the guys a few spots that they can fish tomorrow in their own boat. It was just one of those days. We would just start to get a few bites on a spot, and then have to leave because of rain and lightning. Oh well, at least eh guys were able to fill their limit before we got rained on. Thanks guys, I'll be seeing you this winter in Oklahoma.
Most of the keeper reds were caught using Purple/Chartreuse or Black/Chartreuse Deadly Dudley Terror Tail Jr's on 5/16-ounce jigheads bounced across the bottom and some of the nicer fish were caught using Top Dog Jr's.
