What a Difference a Day Makes

Report Date: August 8, 2002

ADVENTURE SOUTH GUIDE SERVICE-Buras/Empire/Venice---

What a difference a day makes. Yesterday Mr. and Mrs. Davenport could do no wrong once we found the redfish. They caught them until the heat flat wore us out and then we had to beat Mr. Bob over the head with a rod to get him to quit. Today I figured that we would be in for more of the same action when the tide finally did fall, but as the day progressed I could see that it was not to be. The tide was up higher than yesterday this morning, and I did not see any of the hint birds lining the banks this morning. In order to kill some time and let the tide fall, I headed to the outside to see if we could not hook up on some bigger reds. At our first stop, we had some luck, but it was all trout. The fish were not really feeding aggressively and they would just slap at the Top Dog Jr., rather than explode on them. Mr. Bob and myself did manage to catch a few, as did Mrs. Linda on the Baby 1-. After boating several trout at this stop, I decided to try some new spots to see if I could find anything interesting.

I have been looking at this spot for several years, but have never bothered to fish it, so I figured we would give it a try while I was waiting and hoping that the tide would fall and bring the storm minnows out of the grass. As we pulled up I could see rain minnows dancing on the water, and it was not long before Mr. Bob's top water lure got sucked down in a flush of white water. After a brief fight, I put the net under a nice 2 lb. trout. He did this over and over again and Mrs. Linda caught some there as well. I even caught a few on the old top water Carolina rig. Since we were not really keeping and fish, we decided to leave these fish alone and concentrate on another spot. Sure enough, there were rain minnows, and the fish were not far behind. Mrs. Linda caught several nice reds and trout, while Mr. Bob put some more nice trout in the boat on his top water. We then left to go hit the mother load in the storm minnows, but they never did show. I ran all over looking for them, but my efforts were fruitless. At 12:15 we decided to call it a day and will regroup for tomorrow. My crew could have caught plenty more fish in the jigs, but they chose to stay with the surface lures. We are planning to do something a little different tomorrow, so I'll keep you posted.

If you want to go fishing with a guide service that prides itself on giving it's clients an outdoor adventure of a life time, give me a call at (504) 392-1700, or on my cell (504) 382-2711. You will catch fish with us and have a lot of fun doing it! The night fishing action is on, and the available days in August are limited. The Redfish Roundup in the passes down river is on, and should continue through September. Don't miss the boat. I Guarantee Fish and Fun!!! On another note, if you are looking for a good light tackle set up, head on over to the nearest sporting goods store and pick up a Shimano Clarus 7 ft. medium action rod and the Shimano casting or spinning reel of you choice. I just picked up a couple of the Clarus rods at Academy and I can't be happier with them.

And remember, when fishing with Adventure South Guide Service, you will catch your own fish. I will not catch them for you. Until Net Time, Catch Em' Up!!!

P.S. Do not forget about the new episode of Louisiana Outdoor Adventures tonight!!! I have not seen the footage, but I hear that it has one of the best redfish strikes on a She Dog, that you will ever see!!! It plays tonight at 8:30 on COX in Baton Rouge and New Orleans. Don't Miss It!!!!
