ADVENTURE SOUTH GUIDE SERVICE-Buras/Empire/Venice---
2 Day Report
Stayed down in Venice for a few days, so I did not have the ability to write reports. Finished up with the Davenport from Florida on Friday with a limit of reds and not much more. I tried to put them on some big bulls, but the ground swell coming in to my chosen location was too much and with a strengthening wind was getting worse. We did manage to sneak in along the canes and boat 3 bulls with the biggest going just over 44". We also managed to keep 10 reds for them to take back to Florida with them. They've already e-mailed to say that they will be back soon enough.
On Saturday I had Pat and C.J. from the Bossier City area. They came all the way down to get in on some speckled trout action, but the conditions were just not conducive to a good trout bite. Sure, we could have probably caught some little dinks throwing live shrimp around some of the outer bays, but who wants to waste time doing that. We opted to head for the reds and make them our focus first. At our first stop we caught 1, second stop 2, and at our third stop we found them good. I made one pass down a bank and the guys had enough for their limits. The reds were really smoking the Baby 1- crankbaits along the grass lines in the high water. I can definitely say that the guys would have had to work a lot harder for a limit without the Baby 1-'s. We made another pass and caught a few more before giving in to the urge to look for trout. I ran here, there, and everywhere, but the trout eluded me. We took quite a butt-whippin' in the rough seas, but I was determined to leave no oyster or cane unturned. Oh well, even the best efforts some times go unrewarded. We woke on Sunday to a little rain and stiff wind, so I let the guys off the hook and told them to come back when the weather was more cooperative. They agreed and I'm sure that I will see them soon.
Another thing that I want to mention is the RFRI (Recreational Fisheries Research Institute) tournament that is being held this weekend at local marinas, with the weigh-in party to follow at the Woodland Plantation in West Point a la Hache. Proceeds from the event will be dedicated to building an artificial fishing reef in Bay Ronquille, just north of Four Bayous Pass. If you have no other reason to get out and go fishing this weekend, this should be it. Being born and raised in the Port Sulphur area, and now taking charter trips in the surrounding waters of Plaquemines Parish over 200 days a year, I have seen first hand what the loss of marsh, and therefore habitat, has done to our fishery in the entire area. Mother Nature needs help, and we, as outdoorsman, need to dig into our pockets make it happen. At the rate that I've seen the area erode over the last 10 years, I can honestly say that if we do not act now, that our future generations will never see the same kind of productivity from our waters as we do. Get out there! Catch some fish, and help a good cause!
