ADVENTURE SOUTH GUIDE SERVICE -Buras/Empire/Venice---
Saturday and Sunday I had Scott Dansford, his father, and a friend down from Georgia to fish with me. Scott has really wanted to get down to Venice for some redfish action, so that was the focus of our 2 days of fishing. The wind blew pretty good on Saturday, and we were forced to stay in protected waters and fish where we could. Most of the day consisted of drifting the shallows and casting to reds when the clouds moved out long enough for us to get as good visual on them. We tried to get outside for some bigger bulls, but the seas were just too much and we had to continue our shallow water tactics. At one point an 8 lb. red swam by the side of the boat and Scott's dad simply dropped the lure in front of the fish and the fight was on. He could not get over being able to catch a fish like that. He figured for sure that the fish would spook. We ended the day with 15 reds, which was more than I could have asked for given the conditions.
On Sunday we woke too much calmer conditions. I know the guys wanted some big bull redfish, so I went to a spot where they have been schooling by the 1000's. The bait was present, and the water was definitely fishable, but the big reds never did show. I made a move to another location and the guys started hooking nice 26-35" reds immediately. The guys had a ball at this spot, and I could tell that they really enjoyed watching my St. Croix rods bend and hearing that line strip off those Shimano spinning reels. We finished the day off a little early due to thunderstorms, but the limit was already reached and many over sized had been thrown back. The guys want to make this an annual thing, and I'd be more than happy to fish with them anytime.
Yesterday I fished with Bill and his fiancee Ann from New Orleans. Bill bought a trip that I donated to the St. Matthew's fishing rodeo some time back. I was a little concerned on my drive down because of the stiff north winds that were blowing. I headed down river and found a little windbreak, and we started to pick up fish from the get go. It looked as though we would catch our share in no time, so after boating a few fish, I decided try a few more spots. We hit several more spots and only caught 1 fish. I could not figure it out. We fished spots with some good colored, moving water, with bait, but the fish were no where to found. We thought it would be best to head back to our original location, and that proved to be the right move. We finished up our limit on the same drift and then caught and released a few. Even though there was not a significant temperature drop with this front, the change in pressure and shift in wind direction definitely turned the fish off yesterday and today according to the guides I talked to. I'll be on the water tomorrow, and hopefully things will be a little better.
Most of our fish using Deadly Dudley Terror Tails in Purple/Chartreuse or with gold spoons.
